Biography

The first twenty years of my life was spent on a small farm near Milladore, Wisconsin. While growing up near the tail end of a large family, I remember so many simple, but wonderful experiences related to farm life and the outdoors. In my late teens, I met Kim and we eventually married and settled down close to home in Auburndale. As time passed, we raised two daughters and a son.

I began dabbling in photography when Kim’s sister and husband presented me with a 35mm camera kit as a gift for doing the electrical work on their new home. Since then, I have steadily upgraded my camera equipment while learning all I could about nature and photography. In 1990 I set up Nature Visions Photography as a business.

During those years, I have traveled throughout North America, exploring different habitat types and eagerly sharing space with as many of the wild residents as I could. Most of my time though, is spent near home. I have produced thousands of wildlife images within the Mead Wildlife Area alone. This mixture of wetlands, grassland, and forest lies along the “tension zone,” the area situated between the great forests of the North and the vast agricultural openings to the South. It attracts a large number of species either stopping over during migration to feed and rest or making it their home for the warm season.

My photographs have appeared in many types of media across the country, including magazines such as National Wildlife, Duck’s Unlimited, Birder’s World, Ranger Rick, and Nature Photographer. When Sports Afield magazine ran a photo contest, I won first place with an image of a canvasback swimming at sunset. I am contracted with two nature photography stock agencies that market my work nationally. In 2003 I opened a web site where you can view many of my images at www.gerardfuehrer.com.
